Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to question particular decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the system already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
