The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
