Our Top Release of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Number One Position.

Initially, this work might appear closer to a challenging academic quiz than the latest popular music record by an artist whose previous hit was a collaboration with an international K-pop star. Split into four separate sections and sung in thirteen tongues, we have a head-spinning symphonic album exploring feminine mystique, spiritual ascent, and physical transformation, often via the perspective of various saintly figures. The end of a romance—a topic treated with grounded openness elsewhere—soars skyward on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer among an extensive roll call of collaborators. The pure audacity alone makes the work of other artists appear rather small.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux succeeds in escape overly intellectual posturing feels nothing short of a miracle, with complete credit going to the artist. Although it's not her first project to fuse historical sounds and the present, its stakes are much greater here, with the balancing act far more dramatic. The element that truly elevates her fourth album, beyond its complex tunes, dense compositions, and engrained drama, proves to be a core sense of fun. Much like the legendary Björk during her height, you find a wondrous quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener into its whirlwind. Even when she's breaking hearts apart, you still desire to stay right there for the journey.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

This playful energy comes forth clearly during a stirring Italian ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool over several moments. Then, all the music falls away, and we hear a spontaneous laugh followed by a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated string surge thuds down with cartoonish impact. The song then shifts into the wild track featuring racing orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist Björk.

"The magic of this album lies in the listener rarely exactly understand—nor wish to know—what it is going next."

Nearly every track ends at a totally different point from how it began. A track explores the fleeting nature of fame over a delicate symphony before collapsing into electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a cut echoing her earlier trap-infused work starts off moody and sinister, featuring prowling beats, until sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic chorus enter to smooth its rough edges.

The Bridge Between Art & Accessibility

Another crucial achievement on Lux involves navigating the gap between radical innovation and broad accessibility. It is little surprise that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting release to break into the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a collection of utterly undeniable hits. One track performed entirely in the English language builds on a refrain that seems to collect increasingly nagging hooks while it spirals upward. This feat gets echoed by another powerful ballad that grows and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like number charms with its playful, theatrical flair and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the cultural impact of other heartbreak songs, eviscerating an ex- lover described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a painted-on edge, like a storybook figure concealing a blade: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist level, an ambitious grasp for high artistry amid of impending artificial sameness. It eschews self-absorption for sublime elevation, creating a dramatic drama that masterfully manages its inherent excess. It is a deep well of buried treasure that requires time to completely mine but doesn't seem like a chore. While other big pop albums of 2025 seemed like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a lavish feast at which the guests around the table, perhaps tipsy on sacred wine, flutter from discussions about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering grief, and shared stories about useless men. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly creative visionary.
