Bolsonaro arrested after being deemed a escape threat

The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The legal document emphasizes that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, many his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
